Insulate Your Home for Free: How the Weatherization Assistance Program Saves You Money

The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) helps eligible homeowners and renters get free home repairs and energy upgrades that lower utility bills.

Households save an average of $372+ per year and reduce energy use by about 11% through simple weatherproofing improvements.

What Upgrades Can You Get for Free?

WAP covers repairs and improvements that make your home more energy-efficient, including:

  • Adding attic and wall insulation

  • Weatherstripping doors and windows

  • Fixing leaky pipes

  • Installing energy-efficient A/C units

  • Repairing broken furnaces and windows

  • Sealing cracks and drafts

  • Installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

These upgrades help keep your home warmer in winter, cooler in summer, and cheaper to maintain year-round.

Who Qualifies?

WAP is available to low-income households, including both renters and homeowners. Priority may be given to:

  • Seniors

  • Families with children

  • People with disabilities

Eligibility varies by state.

How the Process Works

  1. Apply through your state’s WAP office

  2. If approved, an energy inspector visits your home

  3. You receive a custom upgrade plan

  4. Licensed contractors complete the work at no cost to you

WAP operates on a first-come, first-served basis—apply early for the best chance of approval.
